The original rugged Qualcomm GSP-1600 (left)
has been discontinued, but existing phones are still operational on the Globalstar system. The new small (7.1 oz) GSP-1700 (right) hand-held phones give you
instant telephone access from virtually any location, no matter how remote, anywhere in the Western Hemisphere and from over 39 countries World Wide.* These CDMA digital phones link directly to up to 4 orbiting satellites at one time for exceptional reliability and clarity. The call is then directed to the nearest Earth station for connection to your party. All you need is open sky for the phone to "see" the orbiting satellites. Fax capability is not available at this time. Globalstar Home Service Area now includes the US, Canada and Caribbean. Free Long Distance for all calls to the US, Canada or Puerto Rico and free incoming SMS are also included all home rates. Voice Mail is free on most plans. Click on the link below for the latest rate plans. Data service is available with the GSP-1720 Data Modem board and the necessary antenna and cabling. This is not an upgrade to the GSP-1700. Contact Globalstar directly for this equipment.
You can place and receive calls wherever there is an Earth based gateway. Currently, in addition to all of the Western Hemisphere, you can use a Globalstar
Satellite phone throughout all of Europe, Northern Africa, Russia, Japan, the Northern Western Pacific Rim, Australia, and New Zealand. There is also coverage in North Atlantic and several hundred miles off the coast of South America. Globalstar has over 90% of the populated surface of the planet covered. There is no coverage at the poles due to the satellites' 52 degree inclined orbits. A new gateway in Wasilla, Alaska is now fully operational allowing for enhanced coverage in Alaska and the Yukon. Click on the link below for the latest coverage map.
Globalstar is NOT a replacement for cellular. It is a high quality communication system for use when no other system is available. Globalstar is perfect for Emergency Services and hospitals, outfitters, explorers, bush pilots, timber or oil companies, search and rescue teams, rescue and
forest fire helicopters, contractors, surveyors, forest rangers, ranchers, remote communities, world travelers, or anyone that requires reliable and instant communication in remote areas of the world.
Globalstar also offers the GSP-2900 "fixed base" system (left) that uses any standard touch-tone analog phone for use at job sites, cabins, and more permanent remote locations. Accessories include car kits w/roof antenna (right), Pelican cases and data kits.
Globalstar is in the process of launching a series of new satellites that are intended to replace older satellites that have ceased to function. This launch and the subsequent repositioning of the new satellites has been taking longer than originally planned. As a result, there currently are gaps in the constellation of satellites and extended periods of no coverage. For this reason, Globalstar has extended their GSP-1700 launch promotion as shown below. The exceptionally low cost is intended to give Globalstar customers a price break for their first year of service until the constellation of new satellites is completed in 2012.
