


OCTOBER 26, 2009 MINUTES
The meeting was called to order at 1900 HRS by Commander Doug Foote. Members present were as follows:

The meeting minutes from the September meeting are posted on line. A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as posted. The vote was unanimous in favor.
Commander Foote informed the membership regarding the District Meeting on October 24, 2009 at the Gowen Field Officer's Club. The Post had 4 members present, the second largest contingent at the meeting. A Post report was given by the Post Adjutant. The Post was again presented with the Permanent charter and photos were taken. These will be posted on the website. (Webmaster: Photos are available on request.) There was a good turn out with an excellent lunch. The State Commander conducted a leadership class before the meeting.
Sick Call: Richard Felkey was unable to attend. He is at home with an upper respiratory infection.
The Commander reminded the membership that the Veteran's Day parade will be on November 7, 2009, meeting at 10th & Bannock in Boise on that date at 0900 HRS.
The Commander advised that the food convoy to the Boise Veteran's home will be on November 21, 2009. Beginning at the Safari Inn in Boise. We need to gather food and donations prior to that date for delivery to the Boise home. Anyone participating will receive a free beef stew lunch at the home.
The Commander said that the Mid Winter Conference will be on January 14, 2010 at the Owyhee Plaza in Boise. Legislators are invited to the conference.
The Adjutant was directed by the Commander to contact members who have not yet paid their 2010 dues. He advised that if a member has trouble with funds, to tell one of the Post officers.
The Adjutant reported that the Syringa Bank account has $156.40 and there is an additional $70.00 in hand for deposit.
Old Business
Discussion was held regarding the November 13, 2009 fundraiser dinner at the Trolley House. The Adjutant reported that one of the schools is having their annual carnival on that night and the State football finals will be in progress at that time. A motion was made and seconded to discontinue the planned dinner. The motion was carried with a unanimous vote.
A flag program, which had previously been presented by the Commander was discussed. The plan would be to sell a flag service to local businesses wherein the Post would provide the flag set, set up the brackets and post the flags on holidays, retrieving and storing the flags for a set annual fee of say $35-40. The Adjutant reported discussing this with the Middleton Chamber President, who thought it would be a great plan. A motion was made and seconded to initiate such a plan, There was a unanimous vote in favor.
The Service Officer reported that Agent Orange is now considered by VA as causative in Parkinson's disease. He advised that there is a flag desecration bill before Congress at this time. It is one or two votes short of passing. He also advised that the calligrapher who completed the Post permanent charter is Debi Craft, who is in business in the area.
New Business
The Adjutant reported that he and the Chaplain have been going to local schools, and contacting the Principals regarding services that can be provided by the Post. They were very receptive. We may be asked to participate in one or two flag ceremonies on Veteran's Day. They all expressed a desire to have members of the Post speak in social science and civics classes regarding wars, patriotism and respect for the flag. He also advised that we need to put an article in the local paper about retiring and disposing of flags properly, possible offering the services of the Post.
A committee was formed to prepare and deliver school classes. Volunteers were Doug Foote, Richard Beery and Brad Spencer.
The Adjutant welcomed two new members, Howard Wallace, a US Army veteran and Stoney Winston, a US Air Force veteran, to the Post. Both are Middleton residents. Stoney works for the Middleton School District.
Brad Spencer volunteered to chair a committee to explore Legion Baseball in Middleton. He was asked what a bugle would cost if purchased by the Post. He said they run around $150 for a decent model.
The Commander advised that Boys State begins on 6/6/2010 this next year. He advised that it will cost $350 per candidate to attend.
The Commander advised that we need to get a Post Auxiliary operational. He advised that it will require 10 wives to form an Auxiliary unit for the Post. He advised that the widow of a Legion member can join the Auxiliary.
The Vice Commander said that we should consider honoring a law enforcement officer if anyone knows of a candidate.
There being no other new business, the meeting was adjourned at 2005 HRS.
