SEPTEMBER 28, 2009 MINUTES
The Meeting was called to order at 1900 HRS by Commander Doug Foote.
The Sergeant at Arms reported 14 members present. (Commanders note: this is a 48% attendance.) The Commander reported that the minutes of the last meeting are posted on the Post website. A motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes as posted. The vote was unanimous in favor. David Shephard, who works with the Veteran's Home, was a guest at the meeting.
Sick Call. No known problems at the moment with members or other veterans.
Old Business
The Commander reminded all that we need to form a committee to contact the schools in furtherance of Boy's State, the oratorical contest and the essay contest. This will be soon upon us in the spring. We need to have a fundraiser as was discussed previously, to support these activities.
The Commander related that the Honor Guard attended a flag ceremony and participated in retiring the colors last Sunday in Nampa. This happened at the home of Cliff Williams, the Chaplain for Nampa Fire Department and a Navy veteran. Cliff suffers from ALS. He had served on the Enterprise. We raised a flag at his home which had flown over the Enterprise. About 40 people, including military and Nampa firefighters attended the ceremony.
The Adjutant reported that we currently have $162.50 in the Syringa Bank account and an additional $7.50 ready for deposit, for a total amount of $170.00. The Adjutant has pre-printed 2010 cards for members when they pay their dues, which are due before the end of the year. There were two news articles given to the Middleton Gazette during the month, detailing Post activities, and should be in next month's paper. New member Randall Erickson was welcomed to the Post.
The Service Officer reported that there is nothing new with VA funding. The calligrapher who is completing work on the permanent charter is continuing her work. We do not yet have a completion date.
The Commander advised that we will be shortly ordering 10 rifles from national along with ammunition (blanks) for the Honor Guard, for use in parades and other ceremonies. We had to wait for our permanent charter to order these.
New Business
The Commander reported that there will be a car show at the State Veteran's Home on October 4, 2009 from 1100 HRS until 1400 HRS. He also reported that the next District meeting will be held at the Gowen Field Officer's Club on October 24, 2009. Registration is at 1000HRS. No fees for registration and $10 for lunch. The meeting will last until 1600 HRS. The Commander also advised that the Veteran's Day Parade in Boise will be held this year on November 7, 2009. All members from the Post are invited.
Commander Foote reminded the members that the Legion food convoy will be held on either the Saturday before or the Saturday after Veteran's Day. He will advise members by e-mail of the location and time when the date is certain. Food donations are needed.
David Shephard advised the members that the last Veteran's Home fishing day near Middleton will be on October 10, 2009. He needs volunteers to assist Veterans with mobility and fishing.
A discussion was held regarding having a fundraiser on Veteran's Day. A motion was made and seconded to have a fundraiser. The vote in favor was unanimous. An executive meeting will be held at the Adjutant's residence on next Saturday at 1400 HRS to discuss the fundraiser.
The Chaplain advised that we need to have more involvement in the schools teaching about the history of past wars as the children now have lost contact with that history. He suggested that we contact the schools and find the time there to commemorate wars and the military.
The Commander advised that the remains of MIA CWO Jesse Phelps, US Army, a pilot from the Viet Nam war, are being returned to Boise and he will be interred in the Idaho Veteran's Cemetery. The service will be at Capitol Christian Center on Fairview in Meridian at 1000 HRS on Thursday October 1, 2009. Members are encouraged to attend. Mountain Home Air Force Base will handle the Honor Guard for the services.
There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 2000 HRS
Respectfully submitted
David Freeman
Adjutant
The next meeting will be on October 26 at the Sunrise Cafe in Middleton.
